NetID Lifecycle
A NetID serves as a unique identifier for various university resources. Understanding the lifecycle helps all of our partners and technology professionals manage access effectively.
Creation (Join)
A NetID is created (provisioned) for individuals upon affiliating with the university, either as students or employees. This NetID acts as the username for accessing a wide range of university resources, including:
- Email: University communication primarily occurs through the NetID-associated email address.
- Online systems: Access to course management systems, library resources, and other university portals often require NetID authentication.
Active Usage (Move)
Throughout an individual's affiliation with the A&M System, their NetID remains active. This applies even when their role within the university changes, such as transitioning from student to employee. No specific actions are necessary on the user's part during internal role changes.
Termination & Extension (Leave)
Separation: Upon separation from the university, either through graduation, leaving the university, or employment termination, the NetID is terminated.
- Employees: Following termination, employee NetIDs are disabled within 72 hours after the official separation date.
- Students: Student NetIDs are typically disabled approximately two years after graduation or leaving the university (3 years for international students).
Individuals who wish to maintain a connection with the university after employment termination can have their supervisor request an extension for their NetID prior to the separation date. This extension process typically involves submitting a form with approval from the relevant department.
